I wanted to protect the carpeting in my Saturn Aura, and these WeatherTech mats, advertised as being custom made specifically for your vehicle, with measurements made by using a laser, and constructed of a durable high-quality plastic, seemed to be just what I was looking for. Because I live in Hawaii, I was subject to additional shipping fees, raising the cost to $120 (yup that much!). But I bit the bullet, and bought them. This was back in 2008.
Since they are made to order, expect to wait a week or more for delivery. The mats are good quality, and pretty thick, however for a product this expensive, they could stand to be even thicker. The fit of the mats in my car was close, but far from perfect. There is perhaps as much as a half inch gap between the mat and the adjoining surfaces. This is quite substantial. Unless they are held in place, the mats will slide around the floor. The mats are somewhat pliable, but although you can bend them, you cannot change the permanent shape very much. I ended up wedging one side of the mat under the plastic trim on the door side, and wedging the opposite side under the carpeted trim at the central column. This helps to keep the mats from sliding too much. If your car does not have similar trims, you may have a problem. Individual cars of the same model are not physically identical, but a half inch gap is just too much of a gap. So much for lasers, and a perfect fit.
The hard plastic mats, have a slight pebble finish on the upper surfaces. The pebbling adds a little traction, and there is pretty good grip with rubber soled shoes, but with smooth soled shoes the plastic can be a little slippery, particularly when wet. Someone wearing heels may have a hard time with these mats, as the hard surface has almost no give. The mats have a pattern designed to collect water in the lowest depressed areas. This design works pretty well, with your feet resting on the highest parts of the mat, your feet are in slightly less water. Even so, depending on your footwear, your wet feet may still tend to slide around.
The mats are lightweight, and the undersides are smooth, so unless the fit is tight, the mats will have a tendency to slide on a carpeted surface. For the Aura, on the driver's side only, there is a plastic pin on the floor that hooks into the factory furnished floor mat, to help keep it from sliding. The WeatherTech mat does have a hole that matches up with the location of this pin, which does help to keep it in place. There is no similar pin on the passenger side of the vehicle.
I bought these mats over two years ago, through Amazon, but from different seller (Real Truck Accessories), not AllTimeAuto, the current vendor. Real Truck Accessories policy was if you take the mat out of the wrapper to fit it in your car, they are no longer considered 'saleable', and cannot be returned. Real Truck Accessories was not very customer friendly. Unlike Amazon, the buyer was responsible for the cost of return shipping, plus a 20% restocking fee. I do not know if AllTimeAuto's policy is the same, but you might want to check before you order. It is quite interesting to note that AllTimeAuto offers free shipping for order over $75, but since the mats cost $74.95 qualifying for the offer is a little problematic. WeatherTech also makes mats for the rear seats, but apparently they are not being offered for sale at Amazon.
So far, the mats are holding up pretty well under normal footwear. I suspect that heavy workboots, or sports shoes with cleats, would probably do some damage to them. The mats easily vacuum clean, but the plastic has a tendency to retain dirt and scuff marks.
If your shoes are wet or covered with mud, these mats should keep your carpet from getting too dirty or wet. While the WeatherTech product provides good protection, those lasers need to be recalibrated! The loose fit was a major disappointment. As the mats now cost less than when I bought them, they are a `better' deal, but for what they are, they still seem too expensive. Although a solid four star product, they get a one star deduct for the poor fit and high cost.
If you get a set, hopefully your results will be better than mine. Please post a review.
